Discovering Peace from Pelicans

The Intro…

Hey ya’ll! Did you know you can find healing in nature?

Living in Corpus Christi, I drive OTB (over the bridge) and walk the beach in the mornings. The sunrise beckons my soul to come to see what the day’s canvas will show off. More days than not, I make my way to where the sand and water meet before the big ball of gold peaks over the distant water’s edge. Some days, when my daughter-in-law has a later-in-the-day work schedule, I wait and arrive mid-morning. Trust me, it’s still a beautiful site and there are many adventures even after the shining ball is full up in the sky. This morning’s walk brought many flocks of pelicans flying in formation like fighter jets. Unlike fighter jets, these birds approached in silence. In their quiet presence, the pelicans brought me peace.

The Details…

Pelicans seem to frequent flying over the flat beach area. The area between the dunes and the water where vehicles roll along and park. Beachgoers set up in this flat space to enjoy their day playing in the saltwater or sculpting sand creations. I don’t know any scientific reasoning “why” these gray, feathered creatures would choose this flight pattern, it’s just my observation over the last 4 years. I am fascinated with watching these birds fly directly overhead, seeming to float in the sky. As spring approaches, more and bigger flocks glide by.

The Why…

A clear crisp bright blue sky outlines the opportunity to spot the ‘v’ formation off in the distance. Small dark thin-lined figures come into view moving synchronized and straight toward the watcher. Closer and closer brings the awaited sound of flapping wings. Nothing. Silently soaring overhead, these birds sometimes pass by without being spotted. When I do notice, I am mesmerized, holding my own breath, listening.

Quiet floats by!

Pelicans not only fly quiet but are quiet as they fly. They speak through movement. The leader’s wings still, at first, begin their soft up/down motion as the body sways left or right. What follows is a progression of flow with each successor bird moving in a line seamlessly together. Their smoothness speaks volumes of a silent communication. These large animals embody peace.

The Sum Up…

Peace is felt, seen, heard – reminding me that it exists. I stand mesmerized from that first distant pelican sighting, moving my locked eyes directly overhead, and eventually squinting, hoping to squeeze out every ounce of peace before they disappear. A sweet smile covers my face while I relish the transference of a visible calm gifted to me. My unspoken gratefulness extends to God for these pelicans and the reminder that healing peace abides in my life – I just have to discover it!
